Resin jewellery is light, colourful and can hold almost anything – wood, amber, minerals, gold-coloured flakes. People often ask whether it lasts and whether it yellows over time. Here is our honest answer.
Is resin durable?
Well-cured jeweller’s resin is hard and suitable for everyday wear. It doesn’t shatter like glass and is much lighter than stone. It can, however, scratch – from keys in a pocket, for example – and may crack if dropped hard onto a hard floor.
Does resin turn yellow?
Any epoxy resin can shift slightly in tone over time, especially with long exposure to sun or heat. Jeweller’s resins contain UV stabilisers that slow this down considerably. It shows most in clear, colourless resin; with coloured resin, pearl resin and bog oak the change is practically invisible.
How to make resin jewellery last
- Don’t leave it on a windowsill, in the car or on a radiator.
- Take it off for bathing, swimming, the sauna and cleaning.
- Apply perfume and creams before putting it on.
- Store it separately – in a pouch or box – so it doesn’t get scratched.
- Clean with a soft, dry cloth.
Resin and amber
Jeweller’s resin is a modern material; amber is fossil resin, millions of years old. We often combine the two – Baltic amber set in resin. How to tell them apart: how to tell real Baltic amber.
